Ah, golfing and gambling — two activities that are fun on their own, sure, but together create something magical. They go together like spaghetti and meatballs. Sharks and oceans. BP and oil spills (how topical!).
Anyways, it can be hard to find a place where both of these can be had legally. Some states don’t allow for gambling, while others don’t have the greatest selection of golf courses. Luckily, the area around Laveen, Arizona provides both.

Laveen is actually a suburb of Phoenix, set amongst enormous state and national parks. Saguaro cacti, towering jagged mountains, and craggy canyons form the landscape around Laveen, which makes for incredibly interesting golf courses. The PGA Tour even comes through for the annual Waste Management Phoenix Open. While not all of us can get access to the TPC Scottsdale, there are plenty of other courses available that are just as nice.
Aguila Golf Course is a public track right in the heart of Laveen, stretching nearly 7,000 yards from the Black tees. It’s set right in the rocky orange crags that are typical of the Arizona landscape, and at around $25, you simply can’t beat it. This price will include 18 holes and a cart. A full driving range is available, greens are in great shape, and Golf Digest rates this course 4 out of 5 stars.
Raven Golf Club received 4.5 stars as well as #1 Guest Service in North America from Golf Digest, and all for good reason. The course is gorgeous, and many of the native grasses have been allowed to preserve the natural feel of the course. Originally a fertile farmland, the area was purchased in 1995. Nearly 6,000 pine trees were brought in to provide a unique environment amidst the desert terrain. The rugged mountains lend a wonderful backdrop for the course. To appeal to golfers of all levels, five tees are available with a ride range of total yardage. Green fees will set you back between $66 in the summer to $200 during the winter (when Arizona is most popular.)

When it comes to the gambling side of things, Vee Quiva Hotel & Casino is top-notch. It is all luxury, heavily inspired by the local culture and historic traditions of the area. You’ll find slots, bingo, 36 tables games (e.g. blackjack, pai gow, three-card poker, Spanish 21) and 16 poker tables (e.g. hold ’em, Omaha, stud). Standard rooms and suites are available when you’re done winning or losing money, each featuring modern furniture, big-screen televisions, plush beds, and complimentary wireless Internet access.
Wild Horse Pass is another casino offering, located just half an hour east of Vee Quiva. It also has the usual slots, poker, and table games, and some of the poker jackpots can get north of $15,000. That equals a lot of golf!
If you’re looking for something new and interesting, Laveen is a great place to get your golf and gambling fix in. With its close proximity to Phoenix too, there’s plenty to explore in this beautiful desert city.
